VIDEOS: Inspired by the Archives at Bocas Literary Festival 2019

The 2019 installation of this groundbreaking series at Bocas Literary Festival, in which writers of today are commissioned to explore the Caribbean’s literary archives and write new creative works. Featuring Kendel Hippolyte, Celeste Mohammed, and Alexandra Stewart, chaired by Alison Donnell.

Alexandra Stewart

Alexandra Stewart is a 21 year old writer, spoken word poet and teaching artist from Trinidad. She is the current First Citizens National Poetry Slam Champion (2019). She has also been a four time finalist and the 2017 second place champion in this esteemed competition.

Her writing has carried her to many stages both locally and internationally. Most recently she was invited to Hull, UK to participate in a BBC radio programme called Contains Strong language. Alexandra is passionate about literature and is a student of the Creative Writing MFA Program at the University of the West Indies. She is currently working on her first collection of short stories. Celeste Mohammed

Celeste Mohammed holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her work has appeared in the New England Review, The Rumpus, and Kweli Journal, among other places. She is the recipient of the 2019 Virginia Woolf Award for Short Fiction, a 2018 PEN/Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers, and the 2017 John Gardner Memorial Prize for Fiction. She lives in Trinidad and Tobago.

Kendel Hippolyte

Kendel Hippolyte is a poet, playwright, director and sporadic researcher into Caribbean arts and culture. His poetry has been published in journals and anthologies regionally and internationally. He has taught poetry workshops in various countries and performed at literary events within the Caribbean and beyond. His book, Fault Lines, won the OCM Bocas Prize for Poetry in 2013. His latest poetry collection Wordplanting was published in 2019 by Peepal Tree Press.
